Dynamicity
For the past year, I believed monoculture to have perished, and that this world was now ridden with individuality. This was partially due to the unescapable fear-mongering found in Instagram comment sections, but in all honesty, I came to this belief through my own observation of the world around me.
Though, after extensive research working on Death of the Western Icon, I’ve come to the realization that monoculture was merely a label to depict the trend in consumerism cultivated by the collective youth throughout the late 20th century, due to the consistent technological advancement, and cultural horizon expanse post WW2.
Monoculture still exists today, but now it transcends the physical plane. Therefore, viewing it from the material world, it appears as if we are no longer “in this together”.
How do I know this?
I trust my intuition.
“Your eyes can deceive you. Don’t trust them” - Ben Kenobi
If we judge purely on the material, then yes—we are quite the heterogeneous population. If we judge on the metaphysical—we are right where we should be.
Monoculture is a reaction to whichever great upheaval presents itself to the masses.
Fictional scenario: The Galactic Empire has just started building the Death Star. Once built, they plan to destroy your solar system. Your neighbours are annoying, and you hate the owner of the local cantina, but if you don’t come together, you and everyone you know will die. You are left with no choice but to forgive and forget, unite, and rebel against the opposition.
What change are we, the youth, experiencing in this rapidly evolving digital world? Whatever it is, that is our monoculture.
